Staff Spotlight – Caleb

Caleb is the Camp Counselor and Cabin Lead at Dream Oaks Camp. He is originally from DeLand, Florida and has one older brother named Josh. Dream Oaks Camp has inspired him to switch his career path and pursue a career working with disabilities. Outside of camp, Caleb is very passionate about music. (Just ask him about Lewis Capaldi)

Why did you choose to work at Dream Oaks Camp?

I kind of just stumbled into it right after high school not knowing what I was doing but I thought I’d give it a shot. Little did I know this place would keep me coming back for years to come and also help lead me down a path that would have me pursuing this line of work as a career.

What is your favorite aspect of your job?

My favorite aspect of my job is the people I get to spend time with… my co-workers & our campers!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received isn’t something someone told me, but something I’ve learned. Live in the moment and enjoy them, because you’ll look back and see those moments as the good ole days. You’re in the good ole days now so, just enjoy it.

Is there something that excites you so much it keeps you awake the night before? It’s usually a mix between being excited and anxious. The last time that I can remember feeling like this was the night before my spring break trip to North Carolina. I love visiting mountains whenever I can.

If you had a toaster oven-sized box for all of your stuff, what would you put in it?

This is difficult for me, but I would have to say the photobook my children made me, my dad’s first police revolver, my grandpa’s handkerchief, my mom’s wedding band, and the $2 bills my grandparents gave me.

Tell us about your approach to serving campers and families.

I usually just try to be nice and small talk and I also exercise patience when necessary cause some need it more than others.

Caleb enters each day with humor and an intentional purpose – that purpose is to make an impact on the lives of those around him. He makes everyone around him smile.” – Elena Cassella, Foundation For Dreams Executive Director
